Lesson Plans for the week of January 1-5

Thursday, January 4th - Today, students were enrolled into an online OSHA Certification course.  Students were assigned to watch the first three training videos and take the first exam.

Friday, January 5th - Today, students continued with their online OSHA Certification training.  Students were assigned to watch videos 4-6 and to take the second exam.


Lesson Plans for the week of December 10-14

Monday, December 10th - Today, students watched a Construction Video called Build it Bigger.  No Assignment.

Tuesday, December 11th - Today, students were assigned to read through Chapter 5 and to begin looking up answers for both the Review Questions and Trade Terms.  This assignment will be due on Friday.

Wednesday, December 12th - Today, students were given the Chapter 4 NCCER Exam study guide.  Students had the class period to look up answers to the study guide.  The Chapter 4 NCCER Exam will be given tomorrow.

Thursday, December 13th - Today, students took the Chapter 4 NCCER Exam.  No Assignment.

 Lesson Plans for the week of December 3-7

Monday, December 3rd - Today, we discussed Chapter 3 "Hand and Power Tools."  Students were assigned both Review Questions and Trade Terms for this chapter.  These assignments will be due tomorrow.

Tuesday, December 4th -Today, representatives from Ft. Scott Community College came in and discussed the various Construction Trades opportunities that FSCC had to offer.  No Assignment.

Wednesday, December 5th - Today, students were given a Chapter 3 Test Review sheet.  Tomorrow, students will be taking the Exam over Chapter 3.  Review Sheets were graded and returned at the end of the period.

Thursday, December 6th -Today, students took the Chapter 3 Exam.  No Assignment.

Friday, December 7th - Today, we discussed Chapter 4.  Construction Blueprints.  No Assignment.



Lesson Plans for the week of November 26-30

Monday, November 26th - Today, students were given a test review sheet for the Chapter 2 NCCER Exam that will be given tomorrow.  Students had the opportunity to look up all the answers to the test by filling out their handout.

Tuesday, November 27th - Today, students took the Chapter 2 NCCER Exam.  No assignment.
 
Wednesday, November 28th - Today, students removed forms from the discus pads poured last week.

Thursday, November 29th - Today, students began doing dirt work around the discus pads and piers that we poured.

Friday, November 30th - Today, students continued doing dirt work around the discus pads and piers that we poured.


Lesson Plans for the week of November 19-23

Monday, November 19th - Today, students worked on digging the piers for the discuss cage that will be placed around the discuss rings.  Tomorrow, students will be pouring the concrete for both the discuss rings and the cage piers and this activity will be conducted as a field trip.

Tuesday, November 20th - Today, students poured the concrete for the discus rings that we have been forming.  This activity was used as an all day field trip activity.

Monday, November 12th - Today, we continued discussing Chapter 2 in our texts.  Students were assigned both Review Questions and Trade Terms for this chapter.  Both will be due this Friday.

Tuesday, November 13th - Today, we went back out to the construction site and continued cutting and tying together rebar and began laying out piers for the discus cage.

Lesson Plans for the week of October 22-26

Monday, October 22nd - Today, students poured concrete for our Shot Put Rings project.  This pour was treated as an all day field trip.  Students poured, screeded, bull-floated, and broom finished the concrete pads.

Tuesday, October 23rd - Today we discussed Chapter 2: Building Materials, Fasteners, and Adhesives.  Students were assigned both the Review Questions and Trade Terms which will be due on Thursday.   Tonight and tomorrow night is Parent-Teachers Conference.  Due to football practice, I will not be in attendance until after 6pm.  If you need to see me, but miss my during conference, send me an email and we can set up a time to meet and talk when it is convenient for you.  Thanks.

Monday, August 27th - Today, students took a sixth and final nail driving quiz.  This time, students had to successfully drive 5 16-penny nails into a piece of wood without bending the nails.  We also continued cutting boards for our shop bench project.

Friday, August 31st - Today, we briefly discussed key parts of Chapter 8 which is an introductory unit on Concrete.  Students were given a handout with both Review Questions and Trade Terms from this chapter.  We also watched the video Modern Marvels: Concrete.  Both the Review Questions and Trade Terms will be due next Friday.


Lesson Plans for the week of August 20-24

Monday, August 20th - Today, students had a nail driving quiz.  Students had to successfully drive 5 8-penny nails into a piece of wood without bending the nails.  We also began discussing our first shop project which will be to build a couple of shop work benches for the classroom.

Tuesday, August 21st - Today, students took a second nail driving quiz.  This time, students had to successfully drive 4 8-penny nails and 1 16-penny nail into a piece of wood without bending the nails.  Once finished, students began taking measurements from one of the classroom workbenches which will be used as our pattern.  Students were also asked to make a material list for the project as it would be ordered from the lumber yard.

Wednesday, August 22nd - Today, students took a third nail driving quiz.  This time, students had to successfully drive 3 8-penny nails and 2 16-penny nails into a piece of wood without bending the nails.  We also reviewed proper use of the Miter Saw and students were assigned to make a practice cut to a specified length for accuracy.

Thursday, August 23rd - Today, students took a forth nail driving quiz.  This time, students had to successfully drive 2 8-penny nails and 3 16-penny nails into a piece of wood without bending the nails.  We also began cutting boards for our shop bench project.

Friday, August 24th - Today, students took a fifth nail driving quiz.  This time, students had to successfully drive 1 8-penny nails and 4 16-penny nails into a piece of wood without bending the nails.  We also continued cutting boards for our shop bench project.

Monday, December 10th - Today, students were given the Chapter 4 NCCER Exam study guides.  Students used the period to look up the answers to the study guide.

Tuesday, December 11th - Today, we had an in-class study review for the Chapter 4 NCCER Exam which will be given tomorrow.

Wednesday, December 12th - Today, students took the NCCER Exam over Chapter 4.  Afterwards, students were assigned to create a PowerPoint Presentation over any building structure that they found to be interesting.  The PowerPoint is to have a minimum of 10 pictures showing the various areas of interest.  No text is allowed on the PowerPoint other than the Title.  All information, students give during the presentation has to come from a source found on the internet.  Source info will also be printed off and turned in for grade.

Thursday, December 13th - Today, students continued working on their PowerPoint Presentations.  Presentations are due tomorrow.

Wednesday, November 28th - Today, students began assembling their saw horses.  Today, students are attaching the legs.

Thursday, November 29th - Today, students continued assembling their saw horses by finishing up the legs.

Friday, November 30th - Today, students continued assembling their saw horses, putting on the gussets.

Lesson Plans for the week of September 24-28

Monday, September 24th - Today, we began discussing how to figure square footage and cost for siding.  Together we worked through a couple of examples of how to do this during class.

Tuesday, September 25th - Today, students were then split into teams of 3 and were asked to put together a siding estimate for new siding to be put on our construction shop building here at school.  Students had to first take measurements of each side of the building to determine the overall square footage.  They also had to take measurements of all the doors and windows deducting these amounts from the surface area to be sided.  Estimates for this job will be due by the end of the class period.

Wednesday, September 26th -No Class, Teacher Inservice...

Thursday, September 27th - Today, we began discussing how to figure both volume and cost for concrete.  Students were then split into teams of 3 and were asked to put together a concrete estimate for a new alley way at the school.  Students had to first take measurements of the alley way to determine the overall volume.  Estimates for this job will be due by the end of the class period tomorrow.

Monday, September 17th - Today we continued discussing Chapter 2 Construction Math.  Today's discussion was over fractions.  Students were assigned 25 problems from sections 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.4.1, 2.5.1, and 2.5.3.  These problems will be due tomorrow.

Tuesday, September 18th - Today, students created Khan Academy accounts on the internet.  Students were received a homework grade below an 80% were assigned additional study problems using Khan Academy.  These students were assigned to correctly work 5 problems from Simplifying Fractions, 5 correct from Addition of Fractions, and 5 correct from Subtracting Fractions.  These problems will be due tomorrow.

Wednesday, September 19th - Today we continued discussing Chapter 2 Construction Math.  Today's discussion was over fractions.  Students were assigned 20 problems from sections 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.4.1, and 2.5.1.  These problems will be due tomorrow.

Thursday, September 20th - Today, we began discussing how to figure square footage and cost for painting walls.  Together we worked through a couple of examples of how to do this during class.

Wednesday, September 12th - Today, students were given a handout "Chapter 2 Trade Terms Quiz."  Students were assigned to complete this handout which will be due on Monday.

Thursday, September 13th - Today we began discussing how to use the Architectural Scale.  Students were given a handout in which they had to measure a series of lines using the 1/4" scale.  This worksheet was due by the end of the period.  Chapter 2 Trade Terms Quiz is due on Monday.

Tuesday, September 4th - Today, we reviewed for the Chapter 1 NCCER Exam, which will be given tomorrow.  Students were divided up into two teams playing what I call Family Feud.  The team at the end of the period with the most points was awarded 5 points extra credit.
 
Wednesday, September 5th - Today, students took the NCCER Exam over Chapter 1.  Students must score at least a  70% or higher to receive NCCER Certification.

Thursday, September 6th -

Friday, September 7th - Today we began discussing Chapter 2 Construction Math.  Today's discussion was over simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  Students were assigned 25 problems from sections 2.1.0, 2.3.1, 2.4.1, 2.5.1, and 2.5.3.  These problems will be due tomorrow.

Monday, August 27th - Today, we graded the Trade Terms Quiz assignment in class.  We also looked at fall protection, discussing how to properly inspect it, how to put it on and take it off.  Students worked on their NCCER Exam Question assignment, which is due Friday, as students took turns putting on and taking of the fall protection gear.

Tuesday, August 28th - Today, we discussed a fifth section of Chapter 1 via PowerPoint.  Once finished, students continued to work on their NCCER Exam Question assignmentThe Exam Question assignment is due on Friday.

Wednesday, August 29th - Today, we discussed a sixth and final section of Chapter 1 via PowerPoint.  Once finished, students continued to work on their NCCER Exam Question assignment The Exam Question assignment is due on Friday.


Thursday, August 30th - Today, students conducted the final portion of their NCCER Performance Evaluations, which was proper lifting techniques on the job site.  Those finished with this continued work on their NCCER Exam Question assignment The Exam Question assignment is due tomorrow.


Friday, August 31st - Today, students watched the video Build It Bigger: Arizona Cardinals Football Stadium Project.  Students were given back their graded Exam Question assignments which is to be used as a study guide for the NCCER Exam given next Wednesday.

Monday, August 20th - Today, we discussed the first section of chapter 1 via PowerPoint.  Once finished, students continued to work on their Trade Terms Quiz assignment which is due on Friday.

Tuesday, August 21st - Today, students were given the entire class period to work on their Trade Terms Quiz assignment, which is scheduled to be due on Friday.
 
Wednesday, August 22nd - Today, we discussed a second section of chapter 1 via PowerPoint.  Once finished, students continued to work on their Trade Terms Quiz assignment.  Students also received a handout that had all the chapter exam questions on it for chapter 1.  Students should be looking the answers up to these questions in their spare time as this handout will be used a study guide for their NCCER Exam, which will be given some time in the next two weeks.

Thursday, August 23rd - Today, we began by doing a walk through of our metals shop focusing on the welding and cutting equipment.  We followed that up by discussed a third section of chapter 1 via PowerPoint.  Once finished, students continued to work on their Trade Terms Quiz assignment.  The Trade Terms Quiz assignment will now be due on Monday.

Thursday, August 16th - Today, students filled out and completed the NCCER Registration forms.  Students also took the pretest to Chapter 1, "Basic Safety."

Friday, August 17th - Today, students used the beginning part of the period to complete their pretests over Chapter 1.  Once completed, students were assigned to read over the first 15 pages of chapter 1 in their student texts.  Students were also assigned to begin the Trade Terms Quiz from the end of the chapter.  The Trade Terms Quiz assignment will not be due until next Friday.

Thursday, January 4th - Today, we began discussing our next big design project.  Students are to design and build CO2 Custom Cruisers.  Today's focus was primarily on rough design phase.  Students were assigned to make a sketch using orthographic projection to create both a Side and Top View of their vehicle.  These sketches are due tomorrow at the beginning of the period.
 
Friday, January 5th - Today, students were to transfer their designs onto CAD.  CAD drawings will be due sometime next week.


 Lesson Plans for the week of December 10-14

Monday, December 10th - Today, students were given a handout of a house plan.  Students were assigned to reproduce the houseplan as shown on the handout using Chief Architect.

Tuesday, December 11th - Today, we discussed wall types, door sizes and types, and windows.  Students continued work on their houseplan applying today's information to their assignment.

Wednesday, December 12th - Today, we discussed minimum sizes for hallways, closets, and bathrooms.  Students then continued work on their houseplan applying today's information to their assignment.

Thursday, December 13th - Today, students were presented with their next design challenge.  Students were to build an ATV out of K'NEX that can advance the farthest on an obstacle course.  Students were given motor kits to be used on their ATVs.  ATV's will be due on Tuesday.

Monday, September 3rd - No School, Labor Day...

Tuesday, September 4th -Today, students continued work on the Pavilion Project with primary focus on the Elevations.  Elevations are due Thursday.

Wednesday, September 5th - Today, students continued work on the Pavilion Project with primary focus on the Elevations.  Elevations are due tomorrow.

Thursday, September 6th -Today students began work on their pavilion sectional drawings.  These sectional drawings will be due on Friday.

 Lesson Plans for the week of August 27-31

Monday, August 27th - Today, students first voted on favorite rocket designs within the class.  We also began launching rockets testing for maximum height and flight time.

Tuesday, August 28th - Today, students finished launching rockets testing for maximum height and flight time.

Wednesday, August 29th - Today, we discussed our Rocket Project Results.  Afterward, students began work on the Pavilion Project.  Students are basically reproducing simple blueprints of a Pavilion from a handout.  

Thursday, August 30th - Today, students continued work on the Pavilion Project with primary focus on the Floor Plan.  Floor Plans are due on Tuesday.

Friday, August 31st - Today, students continued work on the Pavilion Project with primary focus on the Floor Plan.  Floor Plans are due on Tuesday.


Lesson Plans for the week of August 20-24

Monday, August 20th - Today, we introduced our first engineering design competition, Aerospace Rocketry.  Students last week were assigned to bring in a 20 oz. pop bottle which will act as the fuel tank for our rockets.  Today, students began building their rockets by hot gluing a tube to their bottle.  Students were also assigned a design sketch for their rockets which will be due tomorrow.

Tuesday, August 21st - Today, we continued with our rocket construction project.  Today's focus was transition cone cutout and assembly.  We will continue rocket construction tomorrow.

Wednesday, August 22nd -Today, we continued with our rocket construction project.  Today's focus was fin design and assembly.  We also watch a short video over "Spaceport America."  We will continue rocket construction tomorrow.
 

Thursday, August 23rd - Today, we continued with our rocket construction project.  Today's focus was still fin design and assembly.  Those students who were ready also began painting our rockets.  We will continue rocket construction tomorrow.

Wednesday, August 15th - Today, we passed out books and reviewed syllabus. No Assignment!!!

Thursday, August 16th - - Today, students were assigned to freehand sketch any object from out of their backpacks.  Sketches will be due tomorrow.

Friday, August 17th - Today, we looked at and discussed student sketches.  Students also were assigned to research "Hydro Rockets" from the internet.  On Monday, we will begin our first engineering design activity which deals with these types of rockets.  Students were assigned to bring in an empty 20 oz. pop bottle prior to Monday.
